What is Pharmacogenetics (PGx)?
PGx is the study of how your genes may affect your body's response to, and interaction with, some prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Benefits of Pharmacogenetics
- Maximize the intended use of a medication or treatment
- Reduce adverse drug reactions
- Speed time to achieving the therapeutic benefit of a drug
- Decrease the chance of side effects or dependency
What is PGx Complete?
PGx Complete is a genetic test that analyzes an individual's genetic makeup to determine how they may respond to certain medications. The test looks at genetic variants in genes that affect drug metabolism, drug targets, and drug transporters. By analyzing these genetic variants, the test can provide information on how an individual is likely to respond to certain medications, including whether they may experience side effects or whether a medication is likely to be effective.
PGx Complete is a type of pharmacogenomic testing, which is the study of how an individual's genes affect their response to medications. It is becoming increasingly important in personalized medicine, as it can help healthcare providers choose the most appropriate medications and dosages for their patients based on their unique genetic makeup.

What are the Four Types of Medication Metabolizers?
Poor metabolizers (PM)
People who have reduced activity of certain enzymes responsible for metabolizing medications, leading to slower breakdown and higher levels of drugs in their bloodstream.
Intermediate metabolizers (IM)
Individuals who have decreased activity of the same enzymes as poor metabolizers, but not to the same extent.
Extensive metabolizers (EM)
People who have normal activity of the enzymes responsible for metabolizing medications.
Ultrarapid metabolizers (UM)
Individuals who have increased activity of the enzymes responsible for metabolizing medications, leading to faster breakdown and lower levels of drugs in their bloodstream.
Understanding your metabolic status is important in determining the appropriate dosage of medications to achieve therapeutic efficacy and avoid adverse drug reactions.
