What’s Measured
The GenoRisk panel evaluates 31 genetic variants found in 23 different genes. The test includes an evaluation of your ApoE status, a gene that alone accounts for approximately one-quarter of the heritability of Alzheimer’s disease. The GenoRisk score is based on a proprietary algorithm developed by a team of scientists and statisticians. All testing is performed in our CAP-accredited and CLIA-certified laboratory in Bellingham, WA.
Your DNA is extracted from your saliva sample, then certain segments of the DNA are amplified by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and subsequently analyzed by mass spectrometry to distinguish the potential variants at each region of interest.

The Science Behind GenoRisk
DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule within your cells that gives your cells the instructions to build the proteins needed for all of your body’s functions. DNA is bundled into a total of 23 chromosome pairs. Housed within these 46 individual chromosomes are an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 genes. DNA itself appears like a twisted ladder called a “double helix.” The rungs of the ladder are formed by nucleotides called “bases.” There are only four nucleotide bases that, depending on how they are arranged, define every aspect of who you are.
The Science Behind GenoRisk
You share >99% of genetic code with other humans. The <1% that is unique to you involves changes to specific nucleotide bases, resulting in changes to specific genes, and in some cases changes in your risk for certain diseases. These different nucleotide arrangements are known as single nucleotide polymorphisms (“SNPs”).
Your unique genetic makeup is known as your “genotype.” The GenoRisk test evaluates 31 SNPs associated with Alzheimer’s disease to provide you with an overall GenoRisk score, along with a calculation of your predicted genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease at various ages.
The Science Behind GenoRisk
It is important to note that this risk calculation is based only on your genetics; other factors including diet, lifestyle, and other medical conditions also play a role in the disease and may increase or decrease your overall risk.
The GenoRisk score was developed by comparing data from 4 different independent studies of Alzheimer’s disease genetics using a variety of statistical prediction models. These models were then compared to determine the model that best predicted Alzheimer’s disease risk.
